TIPS TO SAVE ELECTRICITY
In most homes the largest uses of electricity are for water heating, air conditioning/Air cooling, refrigeration, clothes washing and drying, and lighting. Yet electricity is the most inefficient and expensive way to heat anything. The heating loads should be reduced through use of solar water heaters.
Saving electricity in Refrigeration
Refrigerators are usually the biggest electrical power consumers in the home after air conditioning/air cooling and water heating. To reduce your electrical consumption on refrigerator, you should not keep open its doors except when required. The hot food should be first cooled down before placing it in the fridge. Replace your model, if it is energy inefficient, with an efficient model - The comparison can be available on net or insist your dealer to provide the same. Do not keep the fridge close to wall as it reduces the cooling efficiency of condenser coils. Also make sure the door gasket seals are in good condition.
Saving Electricity in Clothes washing and drying
Go through the manual and set the wash duration accordingly. The cheapest way to dry clothes is by solar heating so avoid using dryer except in extreme emergencies.
Saving Electricity in home Lighting
Light from the sun is free, but most of the houses we live in are not made to take advantage of day lighting. There are several ways to reduce energy without sacrificing lighting quality. By concentrating bright light where you need it rather than evenly lighting the entire room, you can lower overall energy demand, this technique is called task lighting. Another way to save money and energy for lighting is to use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). These low wattage bulbs are based on fluorescent tube technology but are about the size of a "normal" incandescent bulb. One CFL rated at 20 watts gives the same light output as a 75-watt incandescent bulb. While they are not as cheap as a common tube light or bulb, they are cost effective for its entire lifetime.
